Art for Paint Strong Orlando

Here is my submission to the Art Exhibition that Sam Flax will be putting on....

PAINT STRONG ORLANDO

I decided to take a piece that I created back in 2013 and update it.

It was from my original MOTIVATIONAL DOODLE series.

This one is MOTIVATIONAL DOODLE #10

"MOTIVATIONAL DOODLE #10" by Bonnie Sprung ©

I think this piece conveys all the words that embodies
POSITIVE thoughts.

LOVE
DREAM
GRATITUDE
FUN
FAITH
JOY
BELIEVE
PEACE
HOPE
PRIDE

And those are the words that are needed to use, hold on to and surround our selves with.

Painting for EUREKA Part 2

As I continue to work on my painting for
Eureka! The Moment When Art and Science Collide

The Science in my art would be Chemistry. The use of styrofoam in my piece has chemical side effects when it’s in contact with specific paints and heat.

In this closeup photo you can see how burning the styrofoam gives off smoke. This smoke is Toxic.

Using a bar-b-que starter to burn and melt styrofoam

The design I wanted after burning the styrofoam

Styrofoam contains the chemical styrene, which has been linked to cancer, vision and hearing loss, impaired memory and concentration, and nervous system effects…the list goes on. This is why I burn it outside and careful not to breath in this toxic smoke.

Foam is created when air is used to expand a material such as polystyrene, a plastic. Styrofoam is Expanded polystrene foam. Because of the open structure of foam, solvents will dissolve the expanded foam by penetrating the pockets of air and making contact with more of the polystyrene's surface area. So by using paint with the ingredients toluene, xylene and acetone, it created the melted areas on my painting. This was done with Enamel based spray paints.

Spraying close to styrofoam helps to increase the melting.

In this closeup photo you can see how the styrofoam has melted. The porous nature of foam makes it especially vulnerable to solvents.

After I have burned and melted the styrofoam to my liking. I then added extra bright colors to the background. Along with the acrylic colors, a clear spray gloss was used to help strengthen the foam.

Various acrylic paints used along with spray paints.

This is not the final look of this painting. The painting will be finished with oil paints in the style of my WATERY LANDSCAPES HIDDEN WORD SERIES.

The finished painting will be shown at
CityArts Factory on Thursday, March 17 at 6 PM - 9 PM

ARTLANDO Competition Painting

Started with a blank canvas at 11:30am and finished by 5pm on Sat. Oct. 27, 2014 at the first ARTLANDO event.  This big one day Art Fest took place in Loch Haven Park, Orlando FL.

"SUBWAY METRO" by Bonnie Sprung

This painting is the first in a new series. I'm still working on a series title.
The series will be of two images of the same but in two different places.

Back in 2002 I was riding the Paris Metro and this accordion player comes onto the car and plays. Of course I photographed him and painted him in oil on wood.

Then recently Sept. 2014 I was riding the New York Subway and this accordion player comes onto the car and plays. Of course I photographed him and thought what a cool concept to paint the two accordion player images together.

Here is the original photographs put together and desaturated the color.

The way I paint.... I use an assortment of bright acrylic colors then I finish off the painting with a combination two or three colors in oil.

For more original paintings and prints you can go to

Enjoy :)

Bamboo or is It?

I recently had the opportunity to do a fun job....

Turn PVC into BAMBOO.

As a set designer and scenic artist, I have used PVC for many
projects. One of them was to make it look like bamboo,
but when the use is for the stage just painting the sticks was enough.

This project was for the bamboo to be very realistic. So first I did a little
web research and found a few ways to create that bamboo look.

The one that was right for me was to score and heat the growth joints
of the stalk. I found that using an electric barbecue charcoal starter was
perfect for scoring and heating the plastic.

After scoring and heating, squeeze the pipe to get that realistic look.
This project required 2 inch PVC. The smaller the size of the pipe, the easier it
is to press and get that growth bump.

Then it was time to prime and paint after you have used acetone to clean the
writing off the pipe and light sanding for the pant to stick better.

The paint I decided to use was an acrylic enamel. Bamboo has many looks, with
a variety of natural colors. Deeper tones is the way I wanted to go. Starting with
some bright yellows, oranges and greens as my first under layer.

Using red, black, yellow, orange and white I created different tones of browns.
Each being painted on with a chip brush. These brushes are inexpensive and
the bristles give that textured wood grain look.

After the body of the stalk was painted then the I enhanced the growth
joints with a little black and white. Real bamboo also has a sheen. With
that in mind, adding a clear polyurethane coat also adds protection to the paint.

These finished Faux Bamboo sticks will be used for an upcoming event down in Miami. They will be placed over metal piping, used to light several tables. Then they will be available again for rent.

If you have an event that needs specialty lighting and decor please go to

Photos from upcoming event using these bamboo sticks will be added later this month.

If you would like specialty items made, faux finishing, murals or fine art contact

Bonnie's ACEO Project Update 4

The doodling of a fun Motivational Word on a simple two and half by three and a half size mixed media paper is what creates my ACEO card.

This is a project I started back in Feb. of 2013 to help BASE Camp Children's Cancer Foundation. With each card created, a big portion of the donation goes to help fund what is needed for the kids and their families of BASE Camp.

When I was introduced to this foundation, I knew it was a perfect fit for me. I was looking to pay it forward. Unfortunately Cancer has run in my family, so we have always given to the various foundations. BASE CAMP being in my own backyard. I wanted to help out the local kids and families in need.

So, what you can do ... Simple

Send a Self Addressed envelope along with $2.00 and your favorite Motivational Word.

I will create an ACEO original artwork with the word of your choice, and mail it back to you in the self addressed envelope you provided. Only one word per envelope. There is no limit on how many ACEO cards you would like.

All the Cards are numbered, and one day may become a book with just the image of the ACEO card and their number.
