Painting for EUREKA Part 2

As I continue to work on my painting for
Eureka! The Moment When Art and Science Collide

The Science in my art would be Chemistry. The use of styrofoam in my piece has chemical side effects when it’s in contact with specific paints and heat.

In this closeup photo you can see how burning the styrofoam gives off smoke. This smoke is Toxic.

Using a bar-b-que starter to burn and melt styrofoam

The design I wanted after burning the styrofoam

Styrofoam contains the chemical styrene, which has been linked to cancer, vision and hearing loss, impaired memory and concentration, and nervous system effects…the list goes on. This is why I burn it outside and careful not to breath in this toxic smoke.

Foam is created when air is used to expand a material such as polystyrene, a plastic. Styrofoam is Expanded polystrene foam. Because of the open structure of foam, solvents will dissolve the expanded foam by penetrating the pockets of air and making contact with more of the polystyrene's surface area. So by using paint with the ingredients toluene, xylene and acetone, it created the melted areas on my painting. This was done with Enamel based spray paints.

Spraying close to styrofoam helps to increase the melting.

In this closeup photo you can see how the styrofoam has melted. The porous nature of foam makes it especially vulnerable to solvents.

After I have burned and melted the styrofoam to my liking. I then added extra bright colors to the background. Along with the acrylic colors, a clear spray gloss was used to help strengthen the foam.

Various acrylic paints used along with spray paints.

This is not the final look of this painting. The painting will be finished with oil paints in the style of my WATERY LANDSCAPES HIDDEN WORD SERIES.

The finished painting will be shown at
CityArts Factory on Thursday, March 17 at 6 PM - 9 PM

Painting for EUREKA Part 1

Upcoming in March

Eureka! The Moment When Art and Science Collide

Thursday, March 17 at 6 PM - 9 PM

CityArts Factory
29 S Orange Ave, Orlando, Florida 32801

I finally had a chance to start my painting for this show.

For weeks I had sleepless nights on what I wanted to do. I researched what other people have done creatively and some ideas helped some but not really what I was looking for.
Then I decided to continue a series I have been working on since 2010. In this series there are 26 paintings. Most of which are oil/acrylic on muslin. This new piece will be mix media but with the same look just with an addition of foam and wood.

This first photo shows the materials involved. I built a luan covered frame. In the theatre world it would be called a Flat. Then I glued down sheets of white styrofoam that I had used for a couple of theatrical sets I built.

As you can see in this photo all the white styrofoam has been glued down and drying before the next step and that will be where art and science collide.

Back info on my series... It's called WATERY LANDSCAPES HIDDEN WORD SERIES.
When you first look at the paintings you think nice landscape. But then look a little more and then you see a WORD. That's right, these words are motivational. Each letter is created by the trees and plants to create the word. Why motivational .... why not. Some of the words I have used are BELIEVE, DREAM, LOVE, FAITH.. etc.
You can see these paintings on my earlier posts....

In this photo I do an outline of the letters. Stay tuned to upcoming posts on the process and the finished work will be hanging at CityArts Factory in March.

Can You See CARE

"Can You See CARE" is the title of my latest painting for my
Watery Landscape - Hidden Word Series

This series was started back in 2010 and already has been showcased in two solo gallery shows. You can see images on some earlier posts.

"Can You See CARE" by Bonnie Sprung

This painting is 25" x 28" in size.

All originals are for sale. Prices available on request.

Prints on all my paintings are also available. Some are located on my ETSY shop.

To explain the series... Each painting has a hidden word. Some are easy to see, some take a bit longer. The way the trees, leaves and plants are placed create a letter, thus creating a word. Each word is a motivational type word.

I hope you are enjoying my series. If you have a word in mind that I haven't painted yet, Please let me know. Thanks.

Bonnie :)
