Art for Paint Strong Orlando

Here is my submission to the Art Exhibition that Sam Flax will be putting on....

PAINT STRONG ORLANDO

I decided to take a piece that I created back in 2013 and update it.

It was from my original MOTIVATIONAL DOODLE series.

This one is MOTIVATIONAL DOODLE #10

"MOTIVATIONAL DOODLE #10" by Bonnie Sprung ©

I think this piece conveys all the words that embodies
POSITIVE thoughts.

LOVE
DREAM
GRATITUDE
FUN
FAITH
JOY
BELIEVE
PEACE
HOPE
PRIDE

And those are the words that are needed to use, hold on to and surround our selves with.

Painting for EUREKA Part 3

A close to finished of my painting for
Eureka! The Moment When Art and Science Collide

The science of my painting is Chemistry. What the interaction of certain chemicals and heat can do to styrofoam was the basis of how my painting would look.

With that thought I continued a painting series that I have started back in 2010. This painting will be the 24th in my WATERY LANDSCAPES HIDDEN WORD SERIES.

After I was happy with the look of the chemicals and heat did to the styrofoam, I then added bright and florescent colors to the background. To also help in sealing the styrofoam various clear acrylics where used.

Then I began to paint my tree-scapes that will contain a WORD. The trees/foliage create the letter and and in turn then creates a WORD.  When you first see my paintings you see the landscape of trees. Twenty two paintings in the series are painted on muslin/canvas with acrylic and oil paints. This painting has more of a 3d look to it. So seeing the word will be easier to find then most of my other paintings. Like all my paintings in this series have a specific look. All the backgrounds are very, I guess you can say abstract. Paint is squirted, sprayed, spattered, dripped and brushed on. Then I use only three color combinations with the oil paints. In this one I use Blue, Crimson and White.

Painting for EUREKA Part 2

As I continue to work on my painting for
Eureka! The Moment When Art and Science Collide

The Science in my art would be Chemistry. The use of styrofoam in my piece has chemical side effects when it’s in contact with specific paints and heat.

In this closeup photo you can see how burning the styrofoam gives off smoke. This smoke is Toxic.

Using a bar-b-que starter to burn and melt styrofoam

The design I wanted after burning the styrofoam

Styrofoam contains the chemical styrene, which has been linked to cancer, vision and hearing loss, impaired memory and concentration, and nervous system effects…the list goes on. This is why I burn it outside and careful not to breath in this toxic smoke.

Foam is created when air is used to expand a material such as polystyrene, a plastic. Styrofoam is Expanded polystrene foam. Because of the open structure of foam, solvents will dissolve the expanded foam by penetrating the pockets of air and making contact with more of the polystyrene's surface area. So by using paint with the ingredients toluene, xylene and acetone, it created the melted areas on my painting. This was done with Enamel based spray paints.

Spraying close to styrofoam helps to increase the melting.

In this closeup photo you can see how the styrofoam has melted. The porous nature of foam makes it especially vulnerable to solvents.

After I have burned and melted the styrofoam to my liking. I then added extra bright colors to the background. Along with the acrylic colors, a clear spray gloss was used to help strengthen the foam.

Various acrylic paints used along with spray paints.

This is not the final look of this painting. The painting will be finished with oil paints in the style of my WATERY LANDSCAPES HIDDEN WORD SERIES.

The finished painting will be shown at
CityArts Factory on Thursday, March 17 at 6 PM - 9 PM

Painting for EUREKA Part 1

Upcoming in March

Eureka! The Moment When Art and Science Collide

Thursday, March 17 at 6 PM - 9 PM

CityArts Factory
29 S Orange Ave, Orlando, Florida 32801

I finally had a chance to start my painting for this show.

For weeks I had sleepless nights on what I wanted to do. I researched what other people have done creatively and some ideas helped some but not really what I was looking for.
Then I decided to continue a series I have been working on since 2010. In this series there are 26 paintings. Most of which are oil/acrylic on muslin. This new piece will be mix media but with the same look just with an addition of foam and wood.

This first photo shows the materials involved. I built a luan covered frame. In the theatre world it would be called a Flat. Then I glued down sheets of white styrofoam that I had used for a couple of theatrical sets I built.

As you can see in this photo all the white styrofoam has been glued down and drying before the next step and that will be where art and science collide.

Back info on my series... It's called WATERY LANDSCAPES HIDDEN WORD SERIES.
When you first look at the paintings you think nice landscape. But then look a little more and then you see a WORD. That's right, these words are motivational. Each letter is created by the trees and plants to create the word. Why motivational .... why not. Some of the words I have used are BELIEVE, DREAM, LOVE, FAITH.. etc.
You can see these paintings on my earlier posts....

http://uniquelysprung.blogspot.com/2012/08/can-you-see-care.html

In this photo I do an outline of the letters. Stay tuned to upcoming posts on the process and the finished work will be hanging at CityArts Factory in March.

Where Did 2015 Go?

As you will notice that there are no posts in 2015.

This was the year I got soooo busy that I let my blog slide.

It started with the end of 2014 as set designer for Boone High School production of Almost Maine, then later into 2015 as scenic charge for EVITA. I also designed the Spring Variety Musical for the Boone Chorus.

Also at the end of 2014 I became the head scenic charge at The Orlando Repertory Theatre that kept me busy from show to show, painting: A Christmas Story-The Musical , The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg, Diary of a Worm, A Spider, and A Fly, The Wizard Of Oz: Young Performer Edition,  Shrek The Musical , Mary PoppinsFancy Nancy The Musical, Orphie and the Book of Heroes, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer The Musical, Elf Jr. and about to start Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.

Then I became the head scenic charge at UCF, painting:
The Understudy, The Divine SisterHairMan and SupermanSPUNK and the Harlem Literati and about to start on Reeling.

I designed, built and painted sets for GEN Y Productions: Cabaret, The Flick and Bat Boy The Musical. I also painted Heathers.

Also designed, built and painted sets for

First Academy High School: Shrek Jr. and Dearly Departed and just started Seussical.

Westridge Middle School: Shrek Jr.

Central Florida Community Arts: Swamped, The Jungle Book and Alice In Wonderland.

Designed, built and painted a couple of set pieces for Orlando Community Arts: Clare and The Chocolate Nutcracker

I finished the year with Southern Winds Theatre's 18th season of A One Man A Christmas Carol where I stage manage and run the sound.
