New Disk Art Finished

Being green, I transform CD and DVD’s into works of art.

Canvas is glued and trimmed to each individual disk then painted randomly with acrylic colors. Handwritten; using dimensional fabric paints are TV/Movie/Theatre titles and quotes. The disks are also layered to give the faces some depth, using different widths of cut wooden dowels. The portraits are finished with a three color oil paint.

DiskArt Paintings

CD/DVD RIPLEY by Bonnie Sprung ©

This painting can be seen at Ripley's Believe It or Not! in San Fransisco, CA.

There are 150 disks. Each CD and DVD were painted with a variety of acrylic colors; then linked together. The portrait of Robert Ripley was then painted in oils. Along with the final framing the total size is 4'5"x5'5".

When I delivered RIPLEY to the FL warehouse

On May 2, 2014 I debuted a new DiskArt Painting at Faith Arts Village Orlando (FAVO)  221 East Colonial Drive Orlando, FL 32801.

This new DiskArt painting has a total of 207 CD's. What is different from the RIPLEY is that the disks are layered giving it a 3D look. The final size is 5'5"x4'2". The painting is also a portrait of Louis Armstrong and called CD 3D LOUIE.

 CD 3D LOUIE has been hanging since May in the Casselberry City Hall, FL. On Sept. 5, 2014 it will hang for a one day show at the Downtown Orlando University Club. This painting is still for sale.

My DiskArt are created with CD/DVD disks that were old, worn and bad. So instead of them going into the garbage or recycle bin, they have found their way to me and I turned them into cool art. I am always in need of them, so before you toss any, please send them my way. I will give them a new life. One that will put smiles on faces in a new way.

even though she passed away when I was only 2 yrs. old.

Here is a time when I was really into clowns. I still love them, 

but I used to enjoy painting them. 

This oil painting was done from photos I found. 

Then Circus World opened and I was super happy. 

I would go often with camera in hand. 

The oil painting below is one that I created from the photos I took.

I thought it would be fun to post some of the paintings

that still hang in my parents home.

More recent portraits I have painted was for a 

theatrical production of “The Secret Garden” 

at Merritt Island High School. 

These were very large and airbrushed on a shark-tooth scrim.

Theatre Backdrop

A few posts back, you got to see the eleven seven foot high airbrushed portraits I produced in six days. I’m tired just remembering it. Last weekend I got to see the final finished backdrop for the production “The Secret Garden” at Merritt Island High School.

The backdrop was actually the interior of the mansion. Each portrait beautifly framed. The portraits were airbrushed onto a sharktooth scrim. This type of scrim is opaque when lit from the front and becomes transparent when lit from the back. With this effect you then got to see the actors who portrayed their ghosts. The effect was brilliant.

Airbrushing A Backdrop (Post 3)

Here are two more portraits that I finished on Thursday.


As I continue to airbrush, my goal for Friday was for 3 more portraits to be completed. My goal was met.


The material I am airbrushing on is a shark tooth scrim. It has an open weave. As I mentioned in my first post on this project, the scrim is a theatrical backdrop material. When lit from the front, the image painted on it, is seen. When the scrim is lit from behind, it goes transparent and the action behind is seen. I’ll have pictures in April, when the show opens.

How I airbrushed these so quickly, is shown here as a step by step process.
Step 1 - I used an overhead projector.
Step 2 – outline my image
Step 3 – color in my image

At first I was a bit hesitant on how I can airbrush this material and how the colors would lay. I found that the scrim, seemed to be forgiving. No mater how I sprayed, the colors held and no matter how much or how little detail I painted, the painting came alive.

I now have two more portraits finished. Going as fast as I can; each have taken me four hours to complete. Only eight more to go.



When they are all done. Each will have been Framed and hung upstage as a giant portrait gallery. Follow the posts, as I continue to the final finished photo.
