Arsenic & Old Lace Set Design/Build at JCC

This is my 39th set design at the Jewish Community Center in Maitland, FL.  A few were kid and teen shows, but many were for the Center Players (Adult shows). The Center Players next show is Arsenic & Old Lace, that opens April 9th.

Since 1998 I have recycled the flats that were built prior to me and the ones I had  added over the years. Each set is a jigsaw puzzle and before the set is painted for the new production, the walls tell a unique story. Then after the story is told, a new story takes it's place. The walls take on a new color and the play opens. Here is a mini photo opp to see how the auditorium takes on life as a theatre as I build from what I have and what I may have borrowed.

The platform was originally built for Fiddler On The Roof, the second time I did it at the JCC. The stairs were built for Brighton Beach Memoirs. The stain glass structure was built for Rumors which it was really for a double door and now it will be for the window, but had been used for some kids production they painted. The window seat and banister railing was borrowed from Osceola Center for the Arts. They just did Arsenic.

The small window and some of the flats were recently borrowed from the JCC for the play Sweet Evalina that was done at SHAKES.

The windows were built for The Odd Couple. The flats with purple stone and trees were just used in the Center Players production of The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood.

The first coat of base has been painted.

The finishing touches are being added. The set furniture that we are borrowing from Sloan Brothers Furniture will fill the space in a couple of days.

Additional walls that were used in Robin Hood, extend the playing area.

The walls will be based in a sepia tone color scheme. Along with photos, drapery and additional decor.

Here the walls have been painted and the next step will be a stencil pattern on the walls along with a darker wood grain.

The walls have been stenciled and the wood grained walls and floor, along with the added photos, furniture bring the full set together.

To see the totally finished set..... You need to come on out to our show.
